Makassar , Once the trade centre of the Spice Islands but today it is better known for being the power centre of Jemaah Islamiah (JI).
The connection between Makassar and Australia traced back before the European arrival as evidenced by the maritime activities carried out by Makassans with the indigenous people of northern Australia.

More recently Makassar was linked to Australia but in a less favorable light when some Makassar-trained terrorists carried out bombing acts targeting Australians in Bali and Jakarta.

Jemal Ali is a becak-cab driver and is proud of his city where a mosque can be found at earshot all over the metropolis of 1.2m. State-sponsored radio and television stations aired at all hours the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
It is no wonder that Jemal understood well the scriptures of his faith when prompted to describe the person Nabi Isa (Jesus Christ) he correctly stated that He alone is the Holy One that came from heaven.

Like his fellow Muslims he acknowledged that the ticket to heaven remained a mystery that Allah dispenses according to his mercy. Earning the rights to enter the gates of heaven include much fasting, prayer, charity and fighting in jihad. On this jihad path Bashir[1] www | pdf | : 2002 Bali bombings, Wiki and Hambali had lured many JI followers with express tickets to paradise via suicide bombing attacks on infidels. From Makassar JI fighters were sent to the frontline city of Poso in central Sulawesi to commit acts of murder targeting Christians and bombing of church buildings.

For this reason God’s grace abounds even more in Makassar as witnessed by the small but vibrant church community. Even before the month of Ramadan (muslims fast) many Indonesian Christians observed a 40-day fast and gathered regularly to pray. It is no wonder the Church in the island of Sulawesi (Makassar being the state capital) is witnessing many miraculous acts that gave much encouragement to the Church but confounded the Muslims.

And this year came a report of the Meko phenomenon (Meko is located just outside Poso) when an eight-year old child, Selvin Bungge,[2] www | pdf | : New Signs of Various Breakthroughs Are Emerging In Indonesia was wonderfully used by God for miraculous healings to both Christians and Muslims alike.

Acts of love and effective prayers are keys that Christians in Indonesia are using to unlock the bondage that gripped the largest Muslim nation in existence.

Directing Muslims like Jemal to the Holy One of God as the Way, the Truth and the Life and the only means to the Father (John 14:6) will release Muslims from a life of meaningless servitude into a life of freedom based on a loving relationship with the Savior Jesus Christ.

Love your neighbour, bless and pray for Indonesia.

The Identity Crisis in the Church: Christianity versus Jesus

by Dr. John Yates

Being a professional Christian for over 25 years (ordained in 1982), and having taught theology for about 15 of those, I am always amazed at the identity confusion amongst Australian believers.  Relatively few seem to be conscious of what their union with Christ means, not only at a personal subjective level but in all spheres of life.  Many struggle, self – confessedly, to live in a state of intimacy with God.[1]contra, e.g.1 Cor 6:17 , “he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.” For some time I have come to the conclusion that at the root of the problem is not simply indwelling sin nor the forces of the world, but Christianity.

By “Christianity” I mean the construct of organised religious practice that developed in post – Constantinian Europe and was then progressively exported around the globe.  It is the dominant form of religion we are familiar with to this day – church buildings, professional ministries, set services, academic training for ministry and so on.  My agenda here is not to go over the usual ground covered by church renewal advocates, like the house church movement and  the “emerging church”. Rather, I am interested in a more fundamental issue, Christian identity itself.

Disciples of the Church vs Disciples of Christ

The Holy Spirit has been subjecting “Christianity” in Australia to humiliation for some years.  One incident particularly comes to mind.  In 2003 we had the very public scandal of Archbishop Peter Hollingworth resigning from our highest political office, Governor –General.   This was because of his failure to deal with clerical sex abuse while he was archbishop of Brisbane .  The list of scandals involving respected Christian leaders could easily be multiplied, but few commentators touch on the heart of the issue –we have become more focused on church culture than Christ.  I think we are making disciples of the church more than disciples of Christ.  This became very clear to me during a recent pastors breakfast.

Generally when the boys get together there’s talk about “who’s got the biggest” and “who can do it the best”; things were a little different this time as the guest speaker was not a church leader.  His talk drew attention, amongst other things, to the creeping dangers of secularism and Islam.  These topics excited the audience to a palpable degree, but I sensed their acute fear was not of Christ, whose “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18 ).  In fact, the centre of the anxiety seemed to be the loss of our “Christian heritage”. No one present seemed to imagine that the kingdom of God could grow whilst the influence of Christianity on state policy and structures be in decline.

We Missed the Real Issue

While all this was going on I had an awareness that the Holy Spirit was drawing my attention to an earlier conversation at our table.  One of the pastors related how he had recently taken the wedding of a divorcee whose first wife left him for another woman. It turned out that the repressed thought that had been traumatizing the man was, “Did I cause my wife to become gay?”  The entire situation was permeated with confusion about gender identity – the woman was clearly not living in the truth of her femaleness, and her previous husband was uncertain about his masculinity.

Gender identity is generated in an oppositional or bipolar manner.  Adam becomes aware of himself only after the creation of Eve, a helper “corresponding to”, or “standing over against” him.  “A helping being, in which, as soon as he sees it, he will recognise himself.”[2]Delitzsch, my emphasis Before the creation of a woman Adam is simply a name for humankind.  It is in through the illumination, ““This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. ”” (Gen 2:23 ), that Adam becomes a self – consciously male person and Eve a self –consciously female.  Whilst Adam was alone, it was impossible for him to know through introversion his gender identity.

Counselling experience reveals similar patterns.  Where the male-female pattern of intimate bonding is not imaged in a human family the result is always some level of confusion about who we are as sexual beings and how this can find genuine fulfillment.   Auto-eroticism in various expressions is a necessary consequence.  This is more pervasive than we generally imagine, as a (Christian) psychologist said to one of my parishioners, “You need to stop masturbating through your wife.”  Since the “one flesh” of marriage is a type of Christ and the church (Eph 5:32 ), the divorce/gay situation immediately spoke to me about the real spiritual crisis in our midst today that was being overlooked in the pastors breakfast.

Confusion between Christianity and Christ

The primary spiritual struggle in contemporary Australia is not between Christianity and secularism, or Christianity and Islam, but between Jesus’ kingdom and Christianity. At the root of the widespread apathy in the church and the broadly acknowledged lack of intimacy with God, is confusion between Christianity and Christ.  Contemporary Western Christianity largely defines itself by its relationship with itself and its history.  It is extremely introverted.  This is indicated, for example, by the inordinate focus on leadership, ministry, church growth, gifts, the Bible, anointing, prosperity, revival etc. rather than on the person of Jesus and his living presence amongst us. “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.”” (Rev 2:1)

The people of God can only know their deepest inward identity as the Bride of Christ through an immediate and passionate awareness, in the Spirit, that Jesus is their Bridegroom (John 3:29; Rev 19:6-8).  Where this is lacking, much of what transpires as Christian spirituality is simply “spiritual masturbation.”   It may have the appearance of godliness, but is part of a religious culture that lacks the interpenetrative power of holiness (2 Tim 3:5).  (For those with a trinitarian bent, it is not a participation in the perichoretic glory of God, (cf. 2 Pet 1:4).  Nothing less than a back to Jesus movement that emphasises the mystery of Christ at the centre of  “our religion” (1 Tim 3:16) will see any significant change in the spiritual landscape of Australia .

The Jesus Test

On a practical note, for many years I have been teaching my students “the Jesus test”.  When you are listening to a sermon pay attention to how long before the name of Jesus is mentioned, and whether he is used as an illustration of the principle being advocated or its substance.  Practicing this rule has caused many of them (especially in Charismatic – Pentecostal congregations) much distress.  “test all things” (1 Thess 5:20 ).

The greatest obstacle to the advance of the kingdom of God in most of the West is not secularism, religious pluralism or Islam, but a resurgent Christianity.  By this I mean a religion dominated by mega churches, super pastors and political influence. What we are most in need of today is a post – Christianity church.

My thinking on this was confirmed by a recent email sent out about the British religious scene under the heading, “Excarnating Christianity, Incarnating Islam”.

what-thumbThe Church of England Newspaper May 26, 2008 says,

Islam is being institutionalised, incarnated, into national structures amazingly fast, at the same time as …. the ‘excarnation’ of Christianity… out of state policy and structures”.

Whilst this may be sad for those who sentimentalise about the loss of the fides historica (inherited conventional religion), it is surely a sign of the judgement of God on the human construct of privilege and compromise called “Christianity” and a preparation for a return to radical Christ- centred faith that disappeared from Western society long ago.

ISIS and the Strategy of God

ISIS[1]The terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria that has recently invaded Iraq.

by Dr. John Yates

Personal Matters

Last Saturday (5/7/14) I had the option of listening to an Oxford theologian or attending a prayer meeting for the situation in the Middle East. Naturally I went to the prayer meeting. It was quite some experience. Whilst it reminded me of some encounters amongst the Coptic Orthodox in Egypt, it was uniquely wonderful to hear prayers and songs in Aramaic, Jesus own first language. Later there was some fervent intercession in Arabic; the words were foreign but the sense and spirit were transparently Christ-centred. Jesus was interceding for his suffering people in Iraq and beyond (Rom 8:26; 34).

Whilst Christianity has been a constant presence in that part of the world for almost 2,000 years,  the recent resurgence of radical Islam has seen an intensification of the expulsion of Christians and is expected to see a halving of the church population by 2020. Amongst Bible believing Protestants it is popular to focus on Israel, but very few of us seem to show any real interest in the ongoing slaughter and dispossession of Orthodox and Catholic Christians.

Perhaps because differences in outer trappings lead us to assume that they are not “born again”. Whilst my exposure to Eastern Christianity is limited, I have met some profound saints amongst their number. This can be directly attributed to the refining power of persecution (1 Pet 1:6-7). Personal sentiments aside, I believe the Lord spoke to me about some vital things during Saturday’s time of prayer.

Confess Your Sins

One of the most quietly dynamic dimensions of the prayer meeting was when Dave Sibley the founder of Perth Prayer[2] quietly confessed the sin of his nation, America, in trying to make peace in the Middle East through guns. The folly of the Iraq expedition is now historically self-evident, but whilst several made remarks about how the US led invasion has made the situation of Christians across the Middle East vastly more difficult, no one mentioned Australia. Perhaps our Arab friends are simply too polite to mention our national responsibility for the current fiasco in Iraq.

As a local however I can be more direct. We followed the British into WW I, the Americans into Vietnam and continued this pattern by going into Iraq. Perhaps we can learn from current events to be more insightful and less deferential to the geopolitical “powers that be”. Confessing our share in the overconfidence of the “coalition of the willing” to master Iraq and the Arab world, how can this situation be redeemed?

Satan the Enemy

The full extent of the barbarism of ISIS includes crucifixions, cross amputation of limbs, beheadings, whippings, the imposition of jizya (protection money) on infidels and demands that their fighters be given sexual access to women. The Western response to such violent extremes is as politically predictable as it is confused. On the right we have insecure aggression; a militant response is the only way to stem the tide of Islam. (Bible affirming Christians are not immune to this temptation.)

Equally fearful are left leaning politicians, journalists and liberal Christians who are still trying to persuade us that Islam is a “peaceful religion”. Anyone with knowledge of history knows this to be untrue. The Western Church as a whole finds it easier to be political rather than spiritual in it responses to Islamists because deep down we know we lack spiritual power.

We conveniently forget that, “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph 6:12-13). The real enemy is the devil not ISIS. Few Western Christian leaders are willing to admit how deeply we are deceived and how much we lack insight into the tactics of Satan and the strategy of God.

The Strategy of God

The nations in the Middle East can seem to us to be no more than lines on a map, and our Eastern brothers and sisters in the faith little more than anonymous Christians. The truth is that the heart of God has long been in this part of the world, and his heart is presently filled with pain (Gen 6:6). When the children of God are persecuted Jesus is persecuted, as the Lord said to Saul who was set on ravaging the church in Syria, ““I am Jesus who you are persecuting”” (Acts 9:5).

Only one thing can change alleviate the pain of God, living out the blood of the cross so that he receives more children. When the blood of the martyrs is united with the blood of Christ the result must be the release of spiritual power; provided there is the release of forgiveness. “Then they stoned him (Stephen)… He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.” (Acts 7:58, 60).

Scripture is clear; “I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” (Rom 16:19-20). ““And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.””(Revelation 12:10-11). If in the sovereign plan of God our brothers and sisters in the Middle East are being slaughtered this must be for a grand purpose (Acts 2:23; Rev 5:6). This grand purpose is an unprecedented revival amongst Arabic speaking peoples.

We see signs of this sort of move of God amongst Iranians all over the world; surely it is the turn of those closest to the birthplace of Islam. Revival is a sovereign act of God, but it always bears the character of Jesus (Luke 23:34). Unconditional forgiveness must flow through the Church towards those whom we might naturally hate (Luke 6:27-28).

I see a torrent of forgiving love flooding towards the Middle East as a hub of the presence of evil in the age long conflict between God and Satan. As believers at the four corners of the globe focus their love and prayers on Iraq and beyond the Lord will surely move by his Spirit to turn many to Jesus. Islam is showing its true colours, its due time for the Church of God to do the same. Our sign is the sign of the cross.

Leaving the prayer meeting last Saturday I was thanked by several Iraqi Christians.

The truth is I counted it a privilege to be there.

Something of the holy grace of Jesus is deeply embedded in the ancient Christian Churches who for so long have maintained the faith against the tide of Islam.

In the back to front world of God’s kingdom we comfortable Western Christians are those in spiritual poverty and the privileged are those who are being persecuted for righteousness sake (Matt 5:10; Rev 3:17).

The decimating advance of ISIS across Iraq is not just another news story, it is another opportunity for the Australian Church to come of age and cooperate with the costly and uncomfortable strategy of God. I wonder how many more such opportunities will be offered before the limit of the divine patience towards us is reached?

Death In The Name Of Allah & His Prophet

by Timothy Tay

Salman Taseer

The shooting of Salman Taseer, the governor of the leading Pakistani province of Punjab, at close range by a police officer who was assigned to protect him, had once again highlighted the extreme violence Muslim extremists will take for Allah and his Prophet.

Salman Taseer had been an outspoken critic of the strict blasphemy law and recently defended a Christian woman convicted of violating the law and sentenced to death.

Even as the killer was brought to court crowds showered him with rose petals and chanting of: “In the service of the Prophet, death is acceptable, Allah Akbar!”

Meanwhile in Egypt a suicide bomber blew himself up just outside a Coptic church in the port city of Alexandria on New Year’s Day that killed 23 people.

Why do Muslim extremists target Christians?

Al Qaeda was cited as the organisation behind the attack. What is clear is that extremists had created widespread unrest between Christian and Muslim Egyptians. But the more basic cause of this extremism is the teachings found in Qur’an and the Hadiths that sanction violence against Jews and Christians as infidels destined for destruction (Qur’an 98:6).

Anyone who befriend them will draw the wrath of Allah (Qur’an 5:51; 5:60).

During the last century the world struggled through the turmoils set off by Farcism, Nazism and Communism. The world wars and cold wars of the last century are now replaced by worldwide terrorism and violent persecution carried out by a far more dominating and uncompromising force. Islam requires its followers to submit fully in all aspects of living and for nations under Islam to comply with the Sharia laws.

After 9/11 air travel is no longer safe. Yet the inconvenience of air travel is nothing in comparison to the threats posed by nations under the influence of extremists, particularly, those with existing or potential nuclear arsenals at their disposals. This inconvenient truth is before us today. Where will all these lead us? Will the world survive the clash of civilisations that appear to oppose and threaten each other’s survival?

Will the moderate Muslims rise to the defence and diffuse the destructive works of the extremists by emphasising the aspects of Qur’an touching on compassion and respect for individual rights? It is a tall order considering that Prophet Mohammad himself resorted to violence in order to gain power, wealth and influence.

Alternately the moderates may direct attention to the coming of the Mahdi, a messianic figure, as one who will fill the world with justice and fairness without resorting to violence to obtain compliance to his beliefs. The truth is that the ultimate solution is not found in man or the makings of man but in God and only through Him alone that peace may reign.

The Qur’an acknowledges the existence of Isa (Jesus) but not His divinity (Qur’an 4:1715:72-75)

‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’, said Jesus Christ (John 16:33).

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. (John 3:19)

Myths of Moderate Islam – Walid Shoebat

Walid[2] www | : Biography of Walid Shoebat is a former Palestinian Muslim who has carried out terrorist act.

Today a Christian and based in America he travelled the world to warn of the deception of Islam and the delusion Muslims living by.

Moderate Muslims.

The West is led to believe that the majority of Muslims are moderates and the terrorist acts are committed by minority fundamentalists.

There are no moderate Muslim as there are no moderate Christian or Atheist. Islam, in fact, is more that a religion; it is a state, a constitution.

None of the 55 Islamic nations signed the Hague Convention on Women Rights.

The chief Iman in Australia, true to the teaching of Koran, had warned women to dress up and not be like uncovered meat drawing on their deserved response.

Islam is Peace?

How can it be when Fatwa is freely issued against its critics and Islam is behind the world’s leading terrorists who are threatening global stability?

People demonstrate by the millions when the Pope makes a statement that “Islam must never be propagated through violence.”[3] www | pdf | : Regensburg lecture 12 September 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI They object that Islam is not peaceful, yet they express this objection through violence.

Allah is not Jehovah God and Muslim and Christian do not worship the same god.

The God of the Bible describes Himself as our Father and is the Holy Spirit. Allah in the Qur’an is neither a father nor the Holy Spirit. If fact, Allah rejects such titles and do not expect the world’s billion Muslims to accept the Christian God as Allah either for “there is no God but Allah, and Muhammed is his messenger.

Far from being God Allah is Satan in disguise.

It is Satan’s tactic to take bits and pieces of the Bible’s prophetic insight, and then add his own story in order to flip the ending upside down.

They took select portions of Scripture and after twisting them, made sure to lace those portions with deadly cyanide the concocted a whole new Bible that they call the Qu’ran[4] www | pdf | : Quran – Wiki and claim it is the final Word of God.

Jihadists[5] www | pdf | : Jihadists – Wiki took to suicide for Islamic salvation.

They die in order to get instant admission into paradise because Allah took pleasure on those who die fighting for his cause.

In Muslim eyes, murderers are martyrs, their funerals are weddings, and their victims are criminals unworthy of even a funeral.

The promised 72 virgins are the perks for martyrs.

What changed me (to become a Christian) is not all the confession or (Christian) talks on radio but what I have read in the Bible that I do not have to give my life for Allah but God of the Bible had already gave His son to die for me.

If not for the mandate to create the modern state of Israel there would not be a Palestinian state. In 1922, the British declared that the boundary of Palestine[6] www | pdf | : Palestine Under Roman Rule would be limited to the area west of river Jordan and its future to be decided between the Jews and the Arabs. Once a territory is Muslim-ruled the Muslims will never give up their claims.

Strangely though, it does not also say that the same person has a right not to join a trade union.” On the danger of legislators passing to the courts the right to interpret the Charter, Mr Howard had this to add, “The essence of my objection to a Bill of Rights is that, contrary to its very description, it reduces the rights of citizens to determine matters over which they should continue to exercise control.
