Passing the Baton

When To Step Down?

by Timothy Tay

The Catholic Archbishop of Perth, Barry Hickey, had announced his resignation at the age of 75 after reaching the mandatory retirement age for bishops and archbishops introduced by Pope Paul VI (the pope holds his position for life). Rupert Murdoch is 80 and is still on top of his business and now facing the biggest challenge in his life which may wipe out his fortunes and reputation.

When do a person in influential position considers stepping aside?

Death, failing health and catastrophic changes and events often become the deciding factors apart from mandatory retirement just mentioned. Even before the current crisis that hit Murdoch and his corporate empire built around News Corporation I have often pondered why hasn’t Mr Murdoch consider passing the baton to his successor? We can certainly rule out the lack of wealth or even having more desirable life achievements before retiring in Rubert Murdoch’s case.

He has both abundantly.

The decision to retire may depend on the availability and suitability of successor(s).

Mr Murdoch had placed his children in key roles with varying degrees of success. Lachlan Murdoch lost millions in OneTel,[1]OneTel ABC Friday Dec 4 2009 Sunday Profile Story | | | however, Rupert Murdoch himself had presided over the buying and eventual disposal of another failed tech setup – In all fairness Mr Murdoch did invest heavy in grooming his children to be effective CEOs in their own rights but nevertheless the bucks still stop with him.

Ted Turner, a media tycoon and once a very formidable rival to Murdoch, retired in his prime and gave a sizeable fortune to United Nations. On retirement he spent much time at his massive cattle ranches while pursuing social causes that caught his fancy. Incidentally, it was Turner who predicted 30 years ago what was called print journalism as “an obsolete way of distributing information”.[2]Ted Turner Wiki

Unlike Turner and other media tycoons that Murdoch had successfully outfoxed the latter had succeeded in establishing himself as the undisputed media king of the world. A very powerful position indeed if you consider how media charts the course of political, business and other society leaders.  Just recently PM Gillard blamed the press for the lack of support for her carbon tax plans. And this preeminent position of influence that Mr Murdoch enjoys is what I like to suggest  to be the prime reason why he is holding on to power.

The Deceitfulness of Power

In history we can find many leaders who had held on to power way beyond their used-by-dates.

The supreme leaders of the Soviet era – Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev – had done that to the detriment of the people of USSR. Mr Gorbachev, realising the inevitable bankruptcy and disintegration of the union due to bad policies of the past regimes, had the unenviable task of breaking up of the USSR in order to save Russia.

Mao Tze Tung unleashed the Cultural Revolution to satisfy his power urge which resulted in China’s growth been cut back by a decade with millions of Chinese perished as a consequence of Mao’s mistakes. After Mao’s death, Deng Xiaoping started China off in transforming the nation into what had become of it today.

We can include Mr Mubarak and Col Gadhafi in this die-hard grouping.

Even the last Liberal PM, John Howard, who could have enjoyed a more dignified retirement had made the costly mistake to stand for another term with the hope of being the longest stayer at the Lodge.

Of all the examples that one can think of whose time had come to step down but had not none apply more appropriately than Satan or Lucifer.  In all creation there is no one created more powerfully than Satan, created as the archangel, but who at this lofty position decided to rebel against his Creator. (Ezekiel 28)

I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly on the utmost heights. I will ascend above the top of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:13-14)

The dictum, “absolute power corrupts absolutely”, applies to Satan absolutely.

But take comfort for Jesus had overcome Satan, the Prince of this world, and served him the eviction notice through the passage of the Cross (John 12:31; John 16:33) so that Satan will forever stand condemned in the sight of God. (John 14:30; 16:11)

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Mark 8:36

Assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti

by Timothy Tay

The only Christian in the nation’s parliament, Shahbaz Bhatti, 42, was shot dead in his car as he was driven away after visiting his mother on Wednesday morning. This incident follows a similar slaying of Salman Taseer, a liberal politician who was gunned down in Karachi by one of his guards (read editorial below).

Pakistan’s Taliban and al-Qaeda factions had claimed responsibility for the assassination.

“As a Christian, I believe Jesus is my strength. He has given me a power and wisdom and motivation to serve suffering humanity. I follow the principles of my conscience, and I am ready to die and sacrifice my life for the principles I believe,” said Shahbaz Bhatti, on a recent visit to Canada.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was shocked and outraged by this assassination and Christianity Today reported her saying, “I recently had the opportunity to meet with Minister Bhatti. He was a very impressive, courageous man. He was a patriot. He was a man of great conviction. He cared deeply for Pakistan and he had dedicated his life to helping the least among us.

When I spoke with him, he was well aware of the drumbeat of threats against him. Despite those threats, when the Pakistan Government was recently reshuffled and the cabinet shrunk, he agreed to continue his work as the Minister for Minorities Affairs. And on behalf of the United States, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, his friends, and his colleagues.”

Lesson from the Fig Tree

by Timothy Tay

2010 was the warmest year since records are kept and the past decade was also the warmest ever – laying to rest any doubt about global warming.

Queensland floods had been traced to the La Nina effect of this climatic change.

The record floods came after record droughts, an occurrence that struck many regions of the globe.

Some have attributed major disasters as divine retributions for the collective guilt of the states affected – the voodoo practices in Haiti for the earthquake or the persecution of Christians in Pakistan for the massive floods in 2010. Similarly, some had tried to seek agreement from Jesus linking guilt to disastrous happenings in their times away from Jerusalem (Luke 13:1-9).

However, the Lord responded that the people of Jerusalem were just as guilty as those struck by disasters, “unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Jesus told those present this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

It is of no coincidence that the fig tree was mentioned in this parable in reference to the Jerusalem whose residents were filled with pride as guardians to the holy temple of God. In another passage also associating the fig tree to Jerusalem had Jesus making His way from Bethany to Jerusalem when He came upon a fruitless fig tree and placed a curse against it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again. (Mark 11:12-21)

Was Jesus unfair to the fig tree, in particular, it was not the season for fruiting?

It will become clear when we relate the fig tree to Jerusalem, a city that had become so barren of fruits that like wicked Nineveh at the time of Jonah the time for destruction was at hand.

Catastrophe indeed visited the Israelites and it took almost 2000 years before the nation of Israel was restored. There is a lesson to be learned, even a sign given for today, “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”[1]Luke 21 vs29-31 (Luke 21:5-36)

How shall we respond to the signs of our days?

Let us pay heed to the warnings given by Jesus in the passage: “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.[2]Luke 21 vs 34-36

Like the fig tree, the world is destined for destruction, we are living in time of grace that is ticking over – fast.

Death In The Name Of Allah & His Prophet

by Timothy Tay

Salman Taseer

The shooting of Salman Taseer, the governor of the leading Pakistani province of Punjab, at close range by a police officer who was assigned to protect him, had once again highlighted the extreme violence Muslim extremists will take for Allah and his Prophet.

Salman Taseer had been an outspoken critic of the strict blasphemy law and recently defended a Christian woman convicted of violating the law and sentenced to death.

Even as the killer was brought to court crowds showered him with rose petals and chanting of: “In the service of the Prophet, death is acceptable, Allah Akbar!”

Meanwhile in Egypt a suicide bomber blew himself up just outside a Coptic church in the port city of Alexandria on New Year’s Day that killed 23 people.

Why do Muslim extremists target Christians?

Al Qaeda was cited as the organisation behind the attack. What is clear is that extremists had created widespread unrest between Christian and Muslim Egyptians. But the more basic cause of this extremism is the teachings found in Qur’an and the Hadiths that sanction violence against Jews and Christians as infidels destined for destruction (Qur’an 98:6).

Anyone who befriend them will draw the wrath of Allah (Qur’an 5:51; 5:60).

During the last century the world struggled through the turmoils set off by Farcism, Nazism and Communism. The world wars and cold wars of the last century are now replaced by worldwide terrorism and violent persecution carried out by a far more dominating and uncompromising force. Islam requires its followers to submit fully in all aspects of living and for nations under Islam to comply with the Sharia laws.

After 9/11 air travel is no longer safe. Yet the inconvenience of air travel is nothing in comparison to the threats posed by nations under the influence of extremists, particularly, those with existing or potential nuclear arsenals at their disposals. This inconvenient truth is before us today. Where will all these lead us? Will the world survive the clash of civilisations that appear to oppose and threaten each other’s survival?

Will the moderate Muslims rise to the defence and diffuse the destructive works of the extremists by emphasising the aspects of Qur’an touching on compassion and respect for individual rights? It is a tall order considering that Prophet Mohammad himself resorted to violence in order to gain power, wealth and influence.

Alternately the moderates may direct attention to the coming of the Mahdi, a messianic figure, as one who will fill the world with justice and fairness without resorting to violence to obtain compliance to his beliefs. The truth is that the ultimate solution is not found in man or the makings of man but in God and only through Him alone that peace may reign.

The Qur’an acknowledges the existence of Isa (Jesus) but not His divinity (Qur’an 4:1715:72-75)

‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’, said Jesus Christ (John 16:33).

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. (John 3:19)

Myths of Moderate Islam – Walid Shoebat

by Timothy Tay

Extracts from a talk given in Perth on November 2, 2010 & his book, God’s War on Terror[1] www | : God’s War on Terror by Walid Shoebat, Pub: July 21, 2008 | ISBN-10: 0977102181 | ISBN-13: 978-0977102181

Walid[2] www | : Biography of Walid Shoebat is a former Palestinian Muslim who has carried out terrorist act.

Today a Christian and based in America he travelled the world to warn of the deception of Islam and the delusion Muslims living by.

Moderate Muslims.

The West is led to believe that the majority of Muslims are moderates and the terrorist acts are committed by minority fundamentalists.

There are no moderate Muslim as there are no moderate Christian or Atheist. Islam, in fact, is more that a religion; it is a state, a constitution.

None of the 55 Islamic nations signed the Hague Convention on Women Rights.

The chief Iman in Australia, true to the teaching of Koran, had warned women to dress up and not be like uncovered meat drawing on their deserved response.

Islam is Peace?

How can it be when Fatwa is freely issued against its critics and Islam is behind the world’s leading terrorists who are threatening global stability?

People demonstrate by the millions when the Pope makes a statement that “Islam must never be propagated through violence.”[3] www | pdf | : Regensburg lecture 12 September 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI They object that Islam is not peaceful, yet they express this objection through violence.

Allah is not Jehovah God and Muslim and Christian do not worship the same god.

The God of the Bible describes Himself as our Father and is the Holy Spirit. Allah in the Qur’an is neither a father nor the Holy Spirit. If fact, Allah rejects such titles and do not expect the world’s billion Muslims to accept the Christian God as Allah either for “there is no God but Allah, and Muhammed is his messenger.

Far from being God Allah is Satan in disguise.

It is Satan’s tactic to take bits and pieces of the Bible’s prophetic insight, and then add his own story in order to flip the ending upside down.

They took select portions of Scripture and after twisting them, made sure to lace those portions with deadly cyanide the concocted a whole new Bible that they call the Qu’ran[4] www | pdf | : Quran – Wiki and claim it is the final Word of God.

Jihadists[5] www | pdf | : Jihadists – Wiki took to suicide for Islamic salvation.

They die in order to get instant admission into paradise because Allah took pleasure on those who die fighting for his cause.

In Muslim eyes, murderers are martyrs, their funerals are weddings, and their victims are criminals unworthy of even a funeral.

The promised 72 virgins are the perks for martyrs.

What changed me (to become a Christian) is not all the confession or (Christian) talks on radio but what I have read in the Bible that I do not have to give my life for Allah but God of the Bible had already gave His son to die for me.

If not for the mandate to create the modern state of Israel there would not be a Palestinian state. In 1922, the British declared that the boundary of Palestine[6] www | pdf | : Palestine Under Roman Rule would be limited to the area west of river Jordan and its future to be decided between the Jews and the Arabs. Once a territory is Muslim-ruled the Muslims will never give up their claims.

Theory on Everything

by Timothy Tay

This week the eminent scientist, Stephen Hawking, released his latest work, The Grand Design,[1]The Grand Design claiming that science can explain how the universe was formed – from nothing that is. This is in contrast to his 1988 book, A Brief History of Time:

which he eluded that when we did eventually discover the complete theory of time and matter we will finally understand the mind of (creator) God. With this new publication Hawking may well be leading the world into an intellectual exercise that rival Charles Darwin’s in the 19th century with his Theory of Evolution – that humankind’s evolved from apes – inference that God did not make man and therefore the Bible account is untrue.
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (2Ti 4:3-4 ESV)

– modern myths made more convincing given the phenomenon growth in information and knowledge since Paul made the prophecy.

When Pharaoh asked for an indisputable sign from Moses that he was sent by God; Aaron, Moses’ brother, responded by throwing down his wooden staff and it became a living serpent.

Pharaoh’s wise men and sorcerers attempted to do the same and did indeed succeed in imitating Aaron’s act by turning their staffs into serpents as well. The myths are believable so also the theory on  and probably too Hawking’s theory on everything. But like the serpents created by Pharaoh’s wise men they were of no match to Aaron’s (Exodus 7) – the truth had prevailed over the mystics

I remember some years back when Brother Yun,[2]Brother Yun The Heavenly Man, came to Perth and I had the opportunity to ask him about his miraculous rescue from the maximum security prison, he had this to say, “Brother, the prison is real, the harshness of the life within was unimaginable, but I believe in the Truth, and when I heard the call in my distress, “Lazarus,[3]Lazarus come out!”, I knew it was from the Lord and I rose up despite my broken legs and walked through all the doors and gates that somehow were left unlocked or left ajar until I walked out of the prison’s main gate unassisted, and what’s more, a taxi was there waiting!”

Like the biggest bang that supposedly created the universe and now the theory to explain for the existence of everything, the final truth will always belong to God. He spoke and the Big Bang happened and in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

Consider today then the claim Jesus made, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

by Timothy Tay

23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.

24 Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,
or you will reduce me to nothing.

25 Pour out your wrath on the nations
that do not acknowledge you,
on the peoples who do not call on your name.

For they have devoured Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and destroyed his homeland.
(Jeremiah 10:23-25)

Jeremiah understood and knew God; that He is the Lord who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth (9:23-24).

When a man chooses to direct his own steps without God he is walking in darkness perils.

However, if the LORD delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand (Psalms 37:23-24).

Correct me, LORD, but only with justice because the anger of God is a consuming fire destroying everything in its path.

As God is a God of justice there is a price to be paid for sin. But God too is a God of mercy, therefore a sincere appeal for His clemency and grace will not go unheeded. Made this in no uncertain way by calling on the name of Jesus Christ – for salvation comes by no other name in heaven (Acts 12:4).

The first half of Jeremiah’s prayer is in the first person but from the context it is clear that he is praying on behalf of his nation, Israel.

He who is the Portion of Jacob . . . the Maker of all things, including Israel, the tribe of his inheritance (v16).

The prayer concludes with a warning against any nation that poured scorn and death wish on Israel will face the God of Israel who in His justice will bring down judgment against the nations that defy Him and ridiculed His chosen ones.

Over the past year there is a distinctive cold wind that is blowing against Israel from unlikely source. The once staunch allies in the West are now reviewing their support.

Sadly the benediction, I will bless those who bless you (Gen 12:3), coincidentally appears to be fading too from these nations.

Where will Israel’s help come from?

The Christian Church. Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel, sensing the growing loneliness of his nation, had declared that Israel “has no better friends in the world” than Christians who love and support Israel.[1]Posted on Breaking Christian News Apr 7 2008 | | |

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.

Noah’s Ark

by Timothy Tay

Noah’s Ark has been found atop a mountain in Turkey, a team of Turkish and Chinese evangelical explorers said Monday, April 26. The 15-person team claims to have recovered fragments of wood and pieces of rope from a structure on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey that carbon dating has put at 4,800 years old, roughly coinciding with the time the biblical flood was said to have been occurred.

The team is a joint effort between Hong Kong-based Media Evangelism, Noah’s Ark Ministry International and the Turkish government.

This undated handout photo received on April 27 from Noah’s Ark Ministries International shows a member of a group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers looking at wooden beams inside a compartment of a structure that they claim might prove the existence of Noah’s Ark, on Mount Ararat.

He said that the structure at the site featured wooden beams and several compartments that were believed to house animals. The group of evangelical archaeologists ruled out an established human settlement on the grounds that one had never been found above 3,500 metres in the vicinity, Yeung said. Wing-Cheung added that local officials will ask the Turkish government to apply for UNESCO World Heritage status, to protect the site while further archaeological excavation is carried out.

Political Correctness Gone Too Far

by Timothy Tay

A couple with 11 children have been told by the Department for Child Protection that they cannot become foster parents because they sometimes physically discipline their children.

JoGA-political-correctness-03hn and Pat Wieske say the family see fostering as their Christian duty and a chance to give something back to the community but during interviews with the department they revealed that they occasionally smacked their children and the department consequently deemed them unsuitable to be foster parents.[1] www | pdf | : Parents denied right to foster for smacking kids, March 12, 2010,

The often quoted bible verse in relation to child discipline is found in Proverbs 13:24, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

The verse in its context refers to the warning of the damage injustice brings by those ill-disciplined in society[2]23 A poor man’s field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away. and the blessings for those who stick to the straight and narrow[3]25 The righteous eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry., however, this need to inculcate discipline in the young under our charge often got lost by the debate on the peripherals and the symbolics.

23 A poor man’s field may produce abundant food,
but injustice sweeps it away.

24 He who spares the rod hates his son,
but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

25 The righteous eat to their hearts’ content,
but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
Proverbs 13:23-25

Comments Received:

J.C. } Your interpretation of  Prov 13.23-25 by suggesting the verse on ‘sparing the rod’ is in some way related to verse v23 re ‘societal justice’ – to me is stretching the hermeneutical rule of interpreting in context. J.C.

Editor.} There is grounds to link Prov 13:23-25 together taken contextually as well as external evidence. The concern I expressed is our pre-occupation with associating caning with violence in disciplining children that we have avoided disciplining all together.

Christians in Politics

by Timothy Tay 2010

No other Australians, Christians or otherwise, can claim to hold more political clout than the two party-bosses who stood before a gathering of Christian leaders in Canberra on Monday evening put together by Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) and web-streamed into churches all over Australia.

The last time similar telecast was made in 2007 the then opposition leader, Mr Rudd, faced off with a confident PM John Howard. Both Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott are opened about their Christian faith, probably more so than any other pairs in the political opposite of Australian history.

Unlike the 2007 appearance Mr Rudd dispensed with his declaration of his faith but went straight into the defence of his party policies and in the process appeared to present himself as the capable and caring Prime Minister considering the challenging time the world is facing.

Mr Abbott reassured the audience of his Christian credentials and his guiding principle for being in politics by saying, “I want to stress that I am a Christian in politics, not a Christian politician.”

It is to be noted that Mr Rudd is experiencing the most unfavourable opinion polls since he became PM whilst Mr Abbott had just being given the boost in the polls despite making minimal headlines himself -thanks to Mr Rudd campaign to take a bigger cut of the wealth generated by the resource sectors.

What they agreed:

    • Marriage is between a man and a woman
    • Indigenous Australians must take responsibility for themselves, welfare is not the solution

What they disagreed:

    • Who will make a better Prime Minister

Opportunity Missed:

    • Showing brotherly-grace before the Church
    • Christ-centered Kingdom leadership over the political divides:

    • Jim Wallace, founder of ACL, for making this forum possible and has been known to hold the politicians accountable for the pledges and declaration made on this but also on other occasions.
