Christians challenge Costello’s advice to ‘suck it up’

Reverend Tim Costello

Church leaders have hit out at Baptist minister and former World Vision head Tim Costello for “raucously” telling Christians who want religious freedom laws because they feel persecuted to “suck it up” and “calm down”.

Reverend Costello, who is now a senior fellow at the Centre for Public Christianity, drew fire for his comments, which downplayed the experience of Australian Christians in the context of the government’s investigation into religious freedom laws and Israel Folau’s sacking over homophobic Instagram posts referencing the Bible.

“I don’t think there is a risk of persecution — Christians need to calm down,” Reverend Costello said in an interview published on The Guardian website yesterday.

“I would say to Christians if you want to see persecution, let me take you to places where there is persecution of Christians and other religious groups — let me take you to Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, and I will show you persecution. And if they read their Bibles, Jesus said the world will hate you and misunderstand you for following me, but to go on following, loving, serving — so I would say, just suck it up.

“Jesus didn’t go around demanding legislation to protect his rights. Jesus didn’t advocate for freedom-of-religion legislation.”

A spokesman for the Centre for Public Christianity said Reverend Costello had been “trying to take a bit of the heat out of the discussion”.

But Bruce Meller, a minister and assembly clerk of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, called the piece a “strident, raucous overstatement”. “The fact he says it shows that he doesn’t think other Christians are agreeing with him,” Reverend Meller said.

He said that while Reverend Costello was right to recognise the experience of Christians overseas, “negative discrimination is definitely being experienced here” and Australian Christians should be encouraged to speak up in the public debate around religious freedom laws. “This is the most important issue we face at the moment, and not just for Christians,’’ he said. “The climate has changed dramatically, and it is that change to which Christians are reacting.

“The atrocious assault on the Muslim community in Christchurch saw an outpouring of grief that was right and appropriate. But when 300 Christians were blown up in Sri Lanka shortly afterwards, the response was very muted by comparison. Christians are right to react to things like that … They are also entitled to speak up when societal pressure becomes increasingly hostile.’’

Michael Kellahan, executive director of Christian think tank Freedom for Faith, said while he understood the point Reverend Costello was trying to make by comparing Christians in Australia with those overseas, Christians needed to “beware of the speed at which things can change”.

“If Australia wants to be able to speak with credibility to places without freedoms we need to show that we take freedom for all people seriously here,” Mr Kellahan said. “I don’t think a comment like ‘suck it up’ stands well … there will probably be Christians who are disappointed to hear that.

“This is a time when all Australians need to stop throwing in quick-catch headlines and think about constructive ways to live together well. If Tim Costello wants to be part of that, we’d welcome that. But suggesting Christians shouldn’t be interested in religious freedoms protection is not a contribution to make.’’

The Fear-of-God: God’s Creation is a Safe Foundation. by Lachlan Dunjey. May 8, 2019

We should have a proper sense of wonder, awe and respect for God’s creation.

The prophet Isaiah said it well in Chapter 40

Rebellion against God inevitably and crucially involves rebellion against his Creation which underpins so much of ethics and morality. It is foundational.

To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:

Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.

Isaiah 40:25,26 ESV

God’s Creation Order.

Man created in the Image of God “let us make man in our image”

All human life has intrinsic value in all states of dependence and disability from fertilisation to life’s natural end.

It is attacked through abortion; euthanasia; physician-assisted suicide; destructive embryo research; embryo de-selection and eugenics including sex selection and Down Syndrome genocide; babies accidentally born alive after abortion procedure and left to die; after-birth abortion; cloning, chimeras and cyborgs.

Ultimately to control all reproductive and life processes, to create life and design it according to our own wishes, “cleansing” the human race for the future and in the meantime eliminating all that is deemed less than perfect.

Personal autonomy to the exclusion of any God influence.

Eden and the Tower of Babel revisited.

To be free of the Creator God, to render Him unnecessary and be our own gods. We will be in control of our own lives and will choose how and when to die and choose the same for others.

Not putting the same value on human life, eliminating whole communities by conquest and genocidal killing with Christians as prime targets.

Further pushed: From within by the atheistic lobby and “God-haters”; atheistic or naïve genetic experimenters; leftist social engineers.

Remember: permission becomes a compulsion. Apart from the destruction of social order also at threat is liberty of conscience and discrimination in employment.

The creation of Masculinity and Femininity (“bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh”)

So much more than having physical intercourse but nevertheless includes the Creation Mandate to “Be fruitful and multiply”.

It is attacked through: Gender fluidity and transgenders; be whatever sex you like – you are in charge of your destiny – you are your own god. The rebellion against God’s design of “natural” intercourse.

Pushed by: The gay lobby, leftist social engineers and the PC brigade

Remember: permission becomes a compulsion.

Apart from the destruction of social order also at threat is liberty of speech, of belief and to teach our children.

Further specific attacks through public education e.g. Safe Schools Coalition Australia, “Respectful Relationships” and now re-badged yet again as “Inclusive Education” encouraging to declare sexual preferences early leading to identity confusion and also experimentation in sexuality.

Loss of liberty to speak about the dangers of these lifestyles and discrimination in employment and business.

Marriage as a specific subset of sexuality and a Creation Mandate; “one flesh”; “for this reason shall a man cleave to his wife”

It is attacked through: The destruction of marriage as an institution, pushing “marriage” and “family” as we choose and then discarding it as a useless concept with complete sexual freedom.

The decline of the West is achieved by intrinsic moral decay and by declining birth rate to demographic winter

Pushed by: the gay lobby, leftist social engineers and PC brigade

Remember: permission becomes a compulsion.

Apart from the destruction of social order also at threat is liberty of speech, of belief and to teach our children, even around the kitchen tableLoss of liberty to speak about the dangers to society and discrimination in employment and business ultimately also threatening parenthood and, in particular, Christian parenthood. The attacks are unprecedented.

Stewards of Creation

The animal kingdom and the earth – bring order, subdue, care for, work.  Inclusive of a Sabbath rest – and God saw that it was good, and rested.

It is attacked through: Failure and neglect leading to ecological disaster; misdirected economics with chemical or radio-nuclear contamination and de-forestation; deliberate destruction through the war with the possibility of nuclear disaster.

We ignore the principle of a Sabbath rest to our peril.

Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.  Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Psalm 2:10 NIV.

What did Jesus say?  A direct application for today.

Firstly, Jesus affirmed the creation story. Matt 19:4-6 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?  So, they are no longer two, but one flesh.

The warfare against heteronormativity – male and female – is an unprecedented rebellion against God and His Creation.

We must preach and teach the fundamentals of creation and their application – male and female (no spectrum), its complementarity as the ordinance of marriage and the Imago Dei – to be created in the image of God.

Secondly, Jesus explained and affirmed the command (Luke 10:27) to love our neighbour. Loving our neighbour and our neighbour’s children means not only caring for them in present calamity but also warning against approaching calamity (e.g. a flash flood) or helping to protect their future from encroaching evil – in this instance state mandated sexual indoctrination.

Loving our neighbour is not optional.  “Hate evil and love good, then work it out in the public square” (Amos 5:15 Msg)

Thirdly, Jesus said whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matt 18:6).

Jesus’ condemnation re leading children into sin is quite specific as is its judgment. Other evils that concern us do not merit the same specific judgment. May this truth be reflected in our thinking and our living.

If we, as informed Christians, support politicians and educators whose firm commitment is sexual confusion by indoctrination of our children, then we too are guilty of allowing our little ones to be led into sin.

The Fear-of-God

builds up

and makes a world

safe for your children.

Proverbs 14:26 The Message

Sometimes you just gently teach

Sometimes you preach with invitation

Sometimes you confront and challenge

Sometimes you have to condemn

Sometimes you have to drive the money-changers out of the temple

Sometimes you have to walk with Christ to Calvary.

A Song of Protest: a call for prophetic music

I was deeply moved recently by reading a book about early Christian devotion to Jesus. In his letter to the emperor Trajan the Roman official Pliny (c.112 A.D.) records torturing and executing Christians who confessed that they “meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god”. Such devotion under pressure is common in scripture.

reformation in Christian music

David authors psalms whilst being pursued by enemies (ps 7, ps 27, ps 31, ps 34, ps 35, ps 52), Jesus and his disciples sung a praise hymn on the way to Gethsemane (Mark 14:26), beaten and placed in a dungeon “about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (Acts 16:25).

The climactic musical book in scripture runs with the blood of the saints; Revelation is punctuated with hymnic material  (Rev 1:5-6, Rev 4:11, Rev 5:9-10, Rev 7:11-12, Rev 11:17-18, Rev 15:3-4, Rev 19:6-8).

Such worship is deeply inspirational in a way grossly lacking in our churches.

I will never forget coming out of a Pentecostal Church as a new Christian and commenting, “We say ‘Hallelujah, Praise the Lord’ but our lives are not changed.”

I had recognised a disturbing disconnect between my public spiritual performance and holiness of life. Something weird often happens when people sing. During an internship placement whilst at theological college I was amazed to hear the congregation happily sing from a hymn I knew they would never consent to doctrinally. All this points to a need for a reformation in Christian music.

The note I find to be almost completely absent from popular contemporary Christian music is one of protest. My thinking about praise as a protest was first triggered by reading an account of student revival in Ethiopia in the 70’s when that nation was under an anti-Christian Marxist dictatorship.

The believers started to write their own songs, some of which were designed to help them overcome the evils of materialism and secularism.

Such an ethical intent is usually absent from our normal congregational experience. Why aren’t our contemporary song writers exhorting us to beware the temptations of consumerism and immorality?

The answer is found in the exhortations of Paul about corporate praise; Eph.vs.15walk, not as unwise but as wise….be filled with the Spirit, vs.19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart…. Col 3.vs.16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Eph 5:15, 18-19: Col 3:16-17).

The vertical dimension of thankfulness to the Lord is practiced in our churches, but the horizontal dimension of exhorting one another to godliness through song is absent because we lack godly wisdom.

Imbibing a culture which teaches happiness is to be desired and unhappiness avoided our song writers and “worship leaders” cannot impart a godly wisdom grounded in holy fear (Prov 9:10).

They lack the faith to teach us how we are to overcome the world (1 John 5:4).

Despite popular convictions of a renewal in Church worship the steep decline in holiness of life in Western Christianity testifies otherwise. In our spiritual infancy we must return to the teachings of scripture (1 Cor 3:1-3).

Sixty seven psalms are defined as songs of lament[1]Themelios-42-1.pdf pp.89ff..

These are significant for us because they prophetically anticipate the sufferings, and subsequent glory, of Jesus (1 Pet 1:10-11). The psalms of lament must ultimately be understood as the words of him who “offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence” (Heb 5:7).

However, Jesus’ songs of sorrow are a pathway to his song of praise. This is very clear from his use of Psalm 22. Christ’s ultimate lament, ““My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”” (Mark 15:34) is a quote from Psalm 22:1.

His joy in presently praising God in the Church, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you” (Heb 2:12) is a quote from Psalm 22:22.  The brothers of Jesus are intimately bound to his way of suffering and glory (Luke 24:26).

The only way to experience the riches of Christ’s glory is to walk the way of his suffering (Phil 3:10).

This great gospel truth must be expressed in songs of lament-praise in the Church. Christians under pressure have always understood this.

By exhorting, “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name”, Hebrews 13:15 advocates a difficult and glorious way of life that denies the final authority of evil to impede the purposes of God.

Believing this is why I always begin my day with a song, however I’m personally feeling (cf. Eph 5:20; 1 Thess 5:18).

This lifts me up to share the perspective of heaven.

Revelation’s “new song/song of Moses and the Lamb” is sung by those who have “conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name” (Rev 14:3; 15:2-3).

The original beast was the Pharaoh of the exodus deliverance (Ex 15:1) and many beasts still roam the earth.

Secularism, post-modernism, capitalist materialism, hedonism, sexual libertinism seek to devour God’s people.

So the Church today urgently needs a release of prophetic song that is a refutation and denunciation of the powers of evil in their cruel rule over human souls.

We need to have inspired words resonating with biblical truth to sing as an edification and protest against the spiritual harlotry that has so deeply infiltrated Western Christianity (cf. James 4:4; Rev 2:22; Rev 17:1-6). I desperately need this, and so do you!

Missionaries have long diagnosed Australians culturally conditioned apathy to ultimate issues as our most resistant stronghold to the gospel.

To be free from deep and painful concerns about eternity is deemed a positive attribute in our society.

Listen to the music and you will see that this spirit is running riot in our churches

Something encouraging however is stirring in the spirits of God’s. I recently received an email that read, “I struggle with how willing people are to be lukewarm.” Let me finish where I begun.

Pliny tortured and killed Christians not as criminals but as members of a “depraved, excessive superstition” uncompromising of the tolerant religious pluralism of his day.

The “Only Jesus is Lord.” people were politically incorrect in the worse possible way.

They were protesters against a worldview and form of civilisation whose agitations threatened to undermine everything of value to the Empire.

Time would prove Pliny’s verdict on uncompromising early Christianity to be correct.

I long for a time when the boundaries between world and Church will be so starkly visible once again (Mal 3:18).

But to facilitate my protest, and yours, we must ask the Lord to raise up gifted musicians who will give us songs of suffering-and-deliverance filled with genuine spiritual power, baptising the Church in the lament of the cross and the ecstasy of the resurrection. This will herald the dawn of a great revival.

Australia: The attacks are unprecedented

The attacks are unprecedented. From inside, the prosecution of the church by the Tasmanian Anti-discrimination Commission, and from outside, the coordinated terrorist attacks in France.

The Bishop of Hobart and the (national) Catholic Bishop’s Conference have now both been charged with alleged offences in a schools booklet confirming marriage as between male and female. Such charges threaten freedom of speech and this even before the possibility of same-sex marriage being made legal.

The critical issues for the church are freedom to speak truth, to teach truth and Christian values to our children and ultimately our freedom to even believe what we regard as being universal truth, God’s truth.

The principal attacks on these freedoms have come from homosexual activists with the push for same-sex marriage and the adoption of homosexual values and gender fluidity to our children. This has extended to attacks on the definition of family, tolerance for and then pushing for special privileges for transgender identities and has gained support by anti-discrimination advocates and is loosely supported by people who decide truth for themselves.

And it is mind-boggling that it should be so prominent in the media and in the minds of politicians when there is so much else of importance in our nation and world that demands action.

The “slippery slope” progress of these attacks has been from “permission to compulsion”. Compulsion is denied but is already happening with the present charges.

Other issues that relate to God’s creation are the attacks on the intrinsic value of human life as created in the Image of God – abortion, sex selection, eugenic selection, cloning, euthanasia etc.

Some Christians are confused on values of love, mercy, compassion, equality.

In response we need a church that

is awake to evil

joins together in worship and prayer, understanding the nature of spiritual warfare

understands the issues that will bring down a nation

has a united voice in confronting these issues

understands Christian responsibility in behaviour when it comes to choosing between good and evil.

The Revelation to John on the island of Patmos is God’s revelation to the church. It tells of things to come and that God is in charge. The message was first of all to go to the churches in Asia (Turkey) closest to Patmos and then to God’s people of all generations until Jesus comes again.

Blessed is the person who reads aloud this prophecy and those who hear and obey.

It is a message of certainty in a time of uncertainty. In the context of the decline of the West, the turmoil of the Middle East and Islamic terrorism it is a message for our time.

But it is more. The messages to the angels of the seven churches are from Jesus to the church, messages of condemnation, confrontation, encouragement and blessing. They are to wake up, to confess the sins of lukewarmness and compromise and tolerance (!) and to be faithful and victorious to the end.

They are messages to us today. They are to prepare us for the future. Blessed are those who hear.

Top Twenty Myths Pushed by the Homosexual Activists

The entire case for embracing the homosexual lifestyle is built on lies, falsehoods and deception. I have now written three books on this topic, and in them I deal with these myths in great detail. In some 600 pages with around 1400 footnotes I carefully document, assess, and refute the various lies and myths put out by the militant homosexual lobby. I encourage you to get those volumes so that you have the full documentation on all this.

You will find all three here for example:

ISBN-13: 978-0980741841

Here I had planned to offer ten of these myths, but I stumbled upon another great article which covers similar territory and ten more myths, so I will also post the piece by Peter Sprigg as well following my ten myths. Even though there might be a bit of overlap here, these 20 points cover at least in outline form the main porkies put out by the activists.

Here then are my top ten myths:

Homosexuals are born that way. There is no reliable research indicating a genetic basis of homosexuality. At best, there continues to be a debate about what is more influential: nature or nurture. The bulk of homosexuals who have gone for counselling have admitted to early childhood factors, such as an absent or aloof or abusive parent, and so on. And many homosexuals have now fully left the lifestyle, giving lie to the claim that one cannot change.

10% of the population is homosexual. No reputable study has ever come up with these figures. Instead, the numbers always range from 1 to 3 percent. It was sexual deviant Alfred Kinsey and the homosexual activists who invented the 10 percent figure. It is not based on science but ideology and activism.

Homosexuals just want to be free to privately do their thing. Yes many do. And if this were fully true, there would be no need to write this article. But many activists are seeking to ram their agenda down the throats of everyone else. They insist on publicly flaunting, promoting and celebrating their lifestyle, and they are using the heavy hand of the law to quash all opposition.

Homosexual marriage will not affect anyone else. As I carefully document in great detail in my books, everyone is impacted by homosexual marriage. The negative results are getting worse by the day. All over the West those who dare to resist the homosexual agenda or simply affirm heterosexual marriage are losing their jobs, being fined, and even thrown into prison.

There is no slippery slope. We are already seeing the slippery slope in action. Now that homosexual marriage is being accepted, all sorts of other groups are demanding that their forms of sexuality be recognised, applauded and legalised. This we have active and vocal groups calling for the complete recognition of things like polyamory, incest, bestiality, paedophilia, objectamory, and so on. And most of these groups are using the identical arguments used by the homosexual lobby.

Marriage is only about love. Marriage is not just about love between people. Love can exist outside of a marriage: a brother can love a sister, a son can love a father, a girl can love a cat. But marriage is a special kind of love: a life-long commitment, publicly acknowledged, with the possibility of procreation. Heterosexual married love is special, as it entails the possibility of rearing and raising the next generation.

Heterosexual marriage is a recent invention. The secular left seeks to tell you that the traditional married family is a creation of America in the 1950s. This is pure nonsense. All cultures throughout human history have had a recognisable form of male-female marriage. And the institution of marriage existed even before the state acknowledged or regulated it.

Children raised in homosexual households do just fine. This is not the finding of the social sciences. Countless studies have now shown that children raised outside of the male-female marriage unit suffer greatly in every area, from poor educational performance, likelihood to move into drugs and crime, higher suicide rates, and so on. Family structure does matter, and those children raised in homosexual households are now coming out and telling their very sad stories.

Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. Jesus spoke often about the original purposes for human sexuality as found in the opening chapters of Genesis. He affirmed and repeated these norms, and lashed out at other forms. And arguing from silence is poor form anyway: he also said nothing about rape or arson. Does that mean he approved of those things?

Love is all that matters. The Bible has a much different understanding of love than many have today. Biblical love is certainly not about lust, nor is it about getting whatever you crave. Biblical love is about willing the highest good for the other person. And it involves keeping God’s commandments. Jesus and others made it clear that to love God is to keep his Word, not break it or ignore it.

And here is the list from Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council in America:

by Peter Sprigg , CP Guest Contributor March 16, 2015 Original Source: "10 Myths About Redefining Marriage" (Peter Sprigg is a senior fellow at the Family Research Council.)

Advocates of redefining “marriage” to include same-sex couples use a number of arguments that can best be described as “myths.” The reality is often quite different.
 For example:

MYTH: A “one man and one woman” definition imposes a religious definition of marriage on civil society.
REALITY: The definition of marriage is rooted in nature itself. The sexual union of a man and a woman is what reproduces the human race. The durable commitment of that man and woman to one another is what provides children with a mother and father. This is important for people of any religion or of no religion.

MYTH: Children don’t actually need both a mother and a father.
REALITY: An overwhelming body of social science evidence demonstrates that children raised by their own mother and father, who are committed to one another in a lifelong marriage, are happier, healthier and more prosperous than children raised in any other household setting.

MYTH: Marriage can’t be about procreation, because infertile couples are allowed to marry.
REALITY: Laws are based on the rule, not the exception. While not all heterosexual couples do reproduce, it is indisputable that only heterosexual couples can do so naturally. No homosexual couples can do so. That fact provides a clear bright line for limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

MYTH: Legalizing homosexual “marriage” would have no effect on other marriages and families.
REALITY: “The law is a teacher,” and if we change the definition of marriage we will change what we teach about all marriages and families. For example:
-We would teach-wrongly-that procreation is no longer a uniquely important public interest.
-We would teach-wrongly-that children do not need a mother and a father.
-We would teach that adult desires, not the interests of society or the needs of children, should drive the definition of marriage.

MYTH: Defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman is “discrimination.”
REALITY: Every individual has the same access to marriage, but no one has been permitted to marry a child, a close blood relative, a person who is already married, or (through most of human history) a person of the same sex. Removing the last restriction would cast doubt on all the others.

MYTH: Homosexual relationships are the same as heterosexual ones.
REALITY: Research shows that homosexuals are less likely to enter into long-term partnerships, be sexually faithful, or have relationships last a lifetime. Legal recognition of same-sex unions in Scandinavia has led to a weakening of society’s commitment to marriage across the board.

MYTH: Homosexuals suffer serious harm because they’re denied the “protections” of marriage.
REALITY: Many of these “protections” are already available to same-sex couples through the use of private contractual arrangements, such as wills, durable power of attorney, health care proxies, and life insurance policies.

MYTH: Homosexuals are unable to care for their own children if they cannot “marry.”
REALITY: A biological parent has the same rights whether the individual is heterosexual or homosexual. States, if they choose to, can provide for homosexual couples to adopt children without changing the definition of marriage. However, recent research shows that children of homosexual parents suffer significant disadvantages. It is not in children’s interest for society to actively affirm a family structure that may harm them.

MYTH: Laws “banning same-sex marriage” are the same as the old laws that banned interracial marriage.
REALITY: It is actually the supporters of homosexual “marriage” who resemble the opponents of interracial marriage. Both groups sought to exploit the marriage laws in pursuit of a social goal irrelevant to marriage. Neither racial segregation (in the one case) nor the social affirmation of homosexual conduct (in the other) was or is related to the basic public purpose of marriage, which is promoting responsible procreation and the rearing of children in the optimal family setting.

MYTH: Legalizing homosexual “marriage” would not affect anyone’s religious liberty or conscience rights.
REALITY: All taxpayers, consumers and businesses would be forced to provide allowances for homosexual relationships, whether they want to or not. Schools would teach children that homosexual relationships are an option fully equivalent to heterosexual ones, even in opposition to parental teaching. Faith-based organizations and individuals would be forced to compromise their beliefs, or be punished or driven from the public square.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on whether the U.S. Constitution includes a “right” to marry someone of the same sex, they – and the public – should be wary of falling for these myths.

Rights of the Children

Same-Sex Marriage dismisses any possible impact on children where the State deliberately intervenes and forces children to be raised either without their mother or father.
There are different and complementary attributes that a mother and father bring when parenting children.

The United Nation on Rights of the Child states in article 9 “Children should not be separated from their parents unless it is for their own good. For example, if a parent is mistreating or neglecting a child. Children whose parents have separated have the right to stay in contact with both parents, unless this might harm the child.”

The convention also states that “Children also have the right to know their parents and, as far as possible, to be cared for by them.”

Tradition of Marriage always being between a man and woman

Marriage has always been the relationship between a man and a woman. Even in ancient Greece or Rome where homosexuality existed the term marriage was reserved for relationships between a man and a woman.

Marriage is unique as it recognises the important of marriage between a man and woman that provides opportunities for the raising of children.

Religious Freedom

Many people have argued that any bill to change the definition of marriage would include clauses to give religious exemptions. Jurisdictions such as the United States of America and Canada have shown that even with these clauses in place businesses, schools etc are forced to teach that same-sex marriage is the same as heterosexual marriage and that fines can apply for conscientious objections.

Do not Change Legislation for only a few

This debate is not about the right for homosexuals to have relationships with one another. It is about changing the definition of marriage to cater for only a small percentage of the population. We should not change something as significant as marriage for just a few.

No to a conscience vote for the coalition (this is the most important point when writing to coalition members – not relevant to Labor)

The Liberal Party has always held a position to support the family unit. Something as significant as the institution of marriage is something that a political party should have a position on and in the case of the Liberal Party, continue to support the traditional family unit.

I will be looking at how things progress in the future and hope that you support traditional marriage both individually, and that there is no conscience vote. If a motion comes to the party room, it is very important that you vote against the conscience vote! This is the way to uphold the party policy on marriage. This was the policy that the coalition took to the last election and it must be maintained.

Further Notes:

  • Lots of emails are good and phone calls are good. Please go ahead with them.  Hand written letters are the most powerful.  Please write several hand written letters and encourage friends to write as well.
  • A good idea is to invite a group of friends over and have everyone write three short letters each, thus multiplying your efforts.
  • It is critical that coalition MPs on the above list receive as many hand written letters as possible in the second week of June (8 to 12). These letters must urge them to oppose a conscience vote.
  • If you are a member of the relevant party it is a good idea to mention this on your letters.

Thirty-eight of Australia’s Religious Leaders Call on PM and Parliament to Uphold True Meaning of Marriage

Thirty-eight of Australia’s religious leaders, representing major religious traditions and a broad diversity of faiths and cultures, have written a public letter to the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, urging him to resist attempts in Federal Parliament to redefine the meaning of marriage.

“As leaders of Australia’s major religions we write to express the grave concerns that we, and those who share our various faiths, share regarding Bills that have or will be introduced into the Federal Parliament to change the definition of marriage in Australian law,” the statement said.

The definition of marriage enshrined in the Commonwealth Marriage Act 1961

“the union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life” – reflects a truth deeply embedded across diverse communities, faiths and cultures.”

The 38 signatories to the letter include the Catholic and Anglican Archbishops of Sydney, a bishop of the Lutheran Church, bishops from various Eastern and Orthodox Churches, Christian pastors representing major Protestant denominations, senior rabbis from the Jewish community and leaders from both the Sunni and Shia Islamic communities.

While suffering and injustice faced by people with same-sex attraction was to be “deplored”, “this does not require the further deconstruction of marriage as traditionally understood”, the leaders said.

The religious leaders pointed out that Australia’s definition of marriage as a union of a man and a woman is shared by the vast majority of nations and cultures, who represent over 91 per cent of the global population.

They emphasised the need to uphold traditional marriage for the good of children: “as a couple, two persons of the same sex are not able to provide a child with the experience of both mothering and fathering.

Only the institution of marriage between a man and a woman has this inherent capacity to provide children with both of these relationships that are so foundational to our human identity and development.”

The statement pointed out that redefining marriage would have consequences for everyone:

“In overseas jurisdictions where the definition of marriage has been changed, the public manifestation of this belief has resulted in vilification and legal punishment of individuals and institutions. This violates not only freedom of religion, but also the rights of conscience, belief and association, and the right of parents to educate their children according to their own beliefs.”

Letter to Bill Shorten

From: Richard Chieng (

To: Bill Shorten

Subject: Private Member’s Bill on Monday which will finally bring about marriage equality in Australia.
 Hi Bill,

Highly disappointed that you have caved in to the pro-homosexual marriage proponents. By saying that under the current law,  the gay relationships are not equal and that their love was less, you have missed the whole point of the opposition to homosexual marriages. In fact your (clever choice of) words is deceiving and misleading and, I think, is simply  to appease the homosexuals.  Marriage since time immemorial is distinct and different in many fundamental aspects from the homosexual marriage, an idea now conceived by  the gays and lesbians in their insatiable search for the elusive homosexual utopia! Their intrusion into the domain of heterosexual marriage is not the end of their pursuit!

Also, the homosexual lobbyists’ equating of opposition to gay marriage to discrimination based on “the colour of our skin, our gender, …. rights for older people and women” is totally inappropriate and illogical.

Gay couples can never be the same as or equal to heterosexual marriage: Gay couples can never breed on their own; they use their sex organs against nature physiologically; their children by adoption or other means can never have the nurture of both a father and a mother, just to name some irrefutable and obvious ones. How can a logical and unfettered mind reasons that gay marriage and heterosexual marriage are equal or the same when you have such fundamental differences?

Please research on what follows when gay marriage are legalized –

» One example among plenty – Normal students will be taught safe homosexual sex for each different forms of gay sex in schools! Having seen an oversea school list of different gay sex acts and what protection to take for each act, I was shocked that names given to some acts sounded scary to me and I certainly do not want to find out more. Children of our future generations do not need to be taught such garbage!

» The public, including young children and students, are being bombarded openly and by stealth with gay agenda in the form of library books, school curriculum, celebrations, events, print and televised news and, yes, legal actions.

» The slippery slope (to a chaotic & dysfunctional society) will not ceased until our rights of expression in any form against the gay agenda is TOTALLY SILENCED! You ought to watch this video, Bill, on what “gay marriage” is doing in Massachusetts (and other nations where homosexual marriage is legalized).

Still I hope you will lobby against the so called “Marriage Equality”, the term cleverly coined by the homosexuals to send a misleading message to the public!

Kind regards,
Richard Chieng.

Happy Holiday

by Dr. John Yates

Personal Matters

I have never felt happier with God than at this stage of my life and the abiding presence of his goodness is growing ever stronger. The root of these feelings stands in stark contrast to the spirit of the age and our contemporary Christian spirituality. My understanding about what is happening in me was helped by an expression of A.W.Tozer; “My plea is for a great seriousness which will put us in mood with the Son of Man and with the prophets and apostles, that we may attain that moral happiness which is one of the marks of spirituality.” Only a prophet could connect morality with happiness but Christmas is exactly the season to make such a connection.

Whether the greeting is the traditional “Merry Christmas” or the secularised “Happy Holidays” the festive season means maximised enjoyment for most Australians. It is all about having a good time.  Yet something is not quite like it usually is. Gathering clouds are dulling the summer sunshine we intensely love. Economic news is gloomy, terrorism has invaded our own shores and murder and massacre in Pakistan, Nigeria and France challenges our drowsiness. The (alleged) murder of 7 children by their mother in Cairns is appalling and raises deep questions about the sanity of our world. The whirling of such troubles will either bring us closer to the Truth of Christmas or feed our cynicism about the goodness of God.

Popular Happiness

Human nature being what it is people will always choose what they believe is the very best for them, their “highest good”. When Paul remarks; “If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”” (1 Cor 15:32) he is commenting on a society like ours where the highest good has become pleasurable experiences. Few Australians would question the assumption that we are entitled to be happy and everyone wants to feel good about themselves. Life’s quest has become maximising the good life from cradle to grave.

Even more troubling is the Christian form of this popular happiness, one that wants Christ’s cradle without his cross. This type of Christianity treats Jesus as a sort of consumable who exists to make our lives better and promises us more health and happiness in the daily affairs of life. The superficiality of this spirituality is exposed when our worldly affairs take a turn for the worse; “consumer confidence” = “faith” in these sorts of churches rises and falls with the doctor’s report and the stock market. This is vastly different to the life of God revealed in Jesus.

God’s Happy Goodness

God has been eternally happy because he has forever delighted in his own goodness. In this delightful goodness the world was created; “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good….rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of men.” (Gen 1:31; Prov 8:31). Whilst God’s own goodness is the very essence of his existence the fallible creation would soon become fallen. (Ps 136:1). The manifestation of the infinite goodness of God awaited the angelic declaration of the “good news to all mankind” of the incarnation and birth of his own Son (Luke 1:19; Luke 2:10). The rejoicing filling the atmosphere at the first Christmas beams out the reality that “the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared” with the birth of Jesus (Tit 3:4). God’s own goodness is now in human form. When Christ came into the world the Father felt infinitely pleased in/with himself for this at last was his ultimate “good…and perfect gift” to the world (James 1:17). Christmas is the beginning of the gospel.

The final expression of God’s goodness is contained in the good news that God our Saviour who was born has suffered, died and rose again for us (1 Cor 15:1-4). The outcome of Jesus’ life, his indwelling the complete happiness of the Father, is the full and final evidence that “in everything God is working for the good of those who love him” (Rom 8:28; Heb 12:2). This is God’s own moral happiness. From first to last the Lord’s relationship with us is a good one; “The goodness of God is the drive behind all the blessings He daily bestows upon us. God created us because He felt good in His heart and He redeemed us for the same reason.” (Tozer). These deep truths call us to re-examine our experience of the goodness of God.

The Mystery of Happiness

When Moses craved the presence of God and asked the LORD for a manifestation of his glory he received this reply ““I will make all my goodness pass before you”” (Ex 33:15, 18, 19). Those who would see the glory of God must seek his goodness. Through Jesus a revelation far greater than what has offered Moses has come to us (John 1:17). The angelic promise to Joseph was Immanuel, which means “God with us” (Matt 1:23). The measure of this promised presence is not confined to the celebrations of Christmas Day; it is the promise of an abiding sense of the goodness of God. This constancy of God’s presence is independent on the circumstances of this world (2 Cor 12:10). As long as I take the “eyes of my heart” off myself and put them on to the final revelation of the Father’s goodness in Jesus all is well (Eph 1:18). This experience involves a deep mystery in Christ that is well summed up in the words of medieval mystic Julian of Norwich (Col 1:27). The Goodness of God is the highest prayer, and it comes down to the lowest part of our need. It enlivens our soul and brings on it life… “. Let me try to interpret these words in a more openly Christ-centred way.

The incarnate Goodness of God came down to our lost nature in the birth of Jesus and enlivened our broken souls through his resurrection from the dead. As we rest in Jesus we know the abiding presence of the goodness of God; the fruit of such a spiritual presence is enduring happiness (John 15:4, 11). This is far far greater than “Christmas cheer”. Such an “uncontrollable happiness….sent men singing to prison and to death…” (Tozer cf. Acts 16:25). This happiness is an unconquerable share in the Father’s pleasure in his Son and it is the spiritual power of the presence of God a feeble Church and troubled nation needs today.

The Spirit of Christmas calls us to let go of the question, “Is God happy with me?” and to inquire, “Am I happy with God?” To approach this question in a Christ-centred way swells our hearts with a sense of the goodness of God and the moral happiness belonging to us in Jesus. Such unlimited goodness was first birthed for us over 2,000 years ago. It is the pleasure of the Father to share with us now a real measure of the unlimited moral happiness in which we will delight forever and ever. Amen.

Brothers and sisters, stop trying to work out whether God is happy with you and turn away from all elements of consumer Christianity. The Father’s happiness in “the man Christ Jesus” is his good gift to us (1 Tim 2:4). This is the true Christmas message.
