WA to get world-class Internet connectivity when more
than 7500km of fibre optic cable will be laid throughout WA in an ambitious
plan for a new internet network that will be 20 to 200 times faster than
the existing system. The State Government is seeking a private operator
to build, own and operate the infrastructure which will run from Esperance
to the Northern Territory border and from Perth to the South Australian
border. In return for building the network, the private operator will
be guaranteed the State Government’s $100 million telecommunications
contract every year for the next 10 years, worth a total of $1 billion.
The tender will be put out early next year and the network is expected
to go live from July 1, 2009. (The West Australians 30 Nov 06) |
