Training for counsellors

There are a variety of routes to becoming a Counsellor.
*Many Christians attend university and complete secular training. They then train in specific Christian approaches to counselling. ECU, Curtin, Murdoch, UWA and Notre Dame offer courses in Psychology, Counselling, Health Sciences and Social Work.
*Telephone Helplines offer their own training in house.
*Prayer Counselling Ministries have training courses available also. For example, Theophostic Ministries have video courses available as well as formal training classes with supervised counselling training. Elijah House is a training school conducted throughout the year. Their contact is through People Alive Prayer Ministry (listed above).
*Counsellors employed by churches and community care agencies have been trained through university courses and theological colleges in psychology and pastoral care. Many have taken courses in specialist areas such as sexual abuse, drug dependency and relationship counselling in addition to their formal training.
*Bible Colleges include Biblical counselling in their subjects offered
