MAKING
DISCIPLES OF ALL NAIIONS
Timothy Tay
¦ 15th April 2008
When Jesus issued his parting command to his disciples he commissioned
them to make disciples of all nations (people groups). If the cross that
Jesus was crucified in is symbolic of Christian faith which has a vertical
dimension of worship and a horizontal dimension of ministry then the commandments
to love God with all our being and to love our neighbour as ourself become
even more succinct. An over emphasis on faith and worship at the expense
of good work and ministry is bordering dead faith (James
2:17), likewise, exhausting oneself in doing good and losing
the dimension of worship borders on insanity (Heb
9:14, Psalms 46:10). Regretably, the world sees the Church
today in either of these extremes and is not impressed, not the least,
becoming disciples of Christ.
Kevin Rudd's opening talk at Beijing University on his recent visit to
China provides an example for Christian to follow. His stated mission
in politics is to take the message of the Good News to the hungry
and the naked in the city, and the nation, and the world beyond (Christianity
and Politics, May 30, 2005). He is convinced that the church
is and remains an overwhelming force for good in the world.
Mr Rudd might not returned from his packed world tour with any trade deal
or political agreement of significance, however, his ability to communicate
his thoughts clearly without drawing venomous animosity is a skill many
statesmen wished they have, President Bush included. Rudd's ability to
speak Chinese fluently has doubtedly proved lethal. "There is
an old Chinese saying", he says, "Fear no gods, neither anything
on earth, but fear a foreigner who can speak Chinese'" is a
veiled opening salvo to warn the Chinese that he meant business. Whether
Mr Rudd is aware of it or not his approach in reaching out to the Chinese
is similar to that taken by the legendary Hudson Taylor when he absorbed
all the Chineseness that a foreigner could become without compromising
on the Word (message). Mr Rudd has successfully invited himself within
the often spoken unscrutable oriental wall without having to
sacrifice his credentials as a spokesman for the western alliance, if
fact, he now commands even greater respect by western leaders.
But
someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me
your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works"
(James 2:18)

22 JI organisation Indonesian court now ruled illegal. Top
JI's ambitious plan for a pan-Islamic archipelago just north of Australia
has been dealt a major blow when their two top leaders were arrested in
Malaysia with help from Australian authorities. The court found JI guilty
of being an organisation that permits terrorism as it jailed for 15 years
each JI's military commander, Abu Dujana, and its acting leader, Zarkasih.
Also arrested was Purwanto, a doctor who led JI's violent campaign against
Christians in the Sulawesi district of Poso, could possibly had treated
Bali bombings mastermind, Noordin Top, and know his whereabout. <more>
Apr 17 Pope praised America as a nation where strong religious belief
can coexist with secular society.
He gave warning of the “subtle influence of secularism” that
can co-opt religious people and lead even Catholics to accept abortion,
divorce and co-habitation outside of marriage. “Is
it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday and then during
the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary
to those beliefs?” he asked. “Is it consistent for practicing
Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote
sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching or to adopt positions
that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception
to natural death? Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must
be resisted”

11 Hillsong's New Church premise in inner Sydney received
wider community support despite protest from local residents at Rosebery.
The proposed $78.4M development with seating capacity for 2700 and seven-storey
of office space has drawn opposition from local residents due to the noise
and traffic congestion that it may posed. Support for the project has
come from politicians, businessmen and associations and clubs on the ground
that the church will have an overall positive impact on the community.

Apr 9 Abortion
in WA 8328 in 2006, 19.1 per 1000 women (18.2 in 2005). AMA president
Rosanna Capolingua said the latest figures showed that making the socalled
morning after pill Postinor-2 available without a doctor’s prescription
had not reduced the number of abortions. The pill became available direct
from pharmacists in January 2004. "We’re now seeing this explosion
in sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and women are not getting
all the necessary advice when they buy a pill in a pharmacy. Given the
relatively high level of contraceptive use and knowledge in Australia,
many unintended pregnancies are thought to be due to method failure or
inconsistent use." (source:

WA Prostitution bill passed in Parliament after
a descending MP decided to cast her vote for it. The West Australian Government
originally hoped to have the prostitution bill passed quickly last year,
knowing that they had the numbers to do this and refusing to allow a conscience
vote for Labor MPs. The fact that this did not happen but that the passage
of the legislation was delayed again and again, and in the end came down
to one vote in the Upper House, is a testament to God’s hand at
work and the way in which so many Christians have actively been involved
in opposing the legislation. (source:

No one is happy, even a leading brothel owner:
"The laws would fuel the explosion of suburban “quasibrothels”,
expose children to sex work in the home, put women and children at risk
of violence, increase the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and
see more migrant women working illegally and being held against their
will as “sex slaves”. How are they going to enforce these
laws? There’s a lot more work to do. I don’t think they’ve
consulted enough with the industry.”

Mar 28 New rift in WA Anglican Church with reports from
The West today that senior Anglican bishops are voicing their objections
over WA Anglican Archbishop Roger Herft and Dean of Perth John Shepherd
views that Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven may not be interpreted
as both physical and spiritual. "If God cannot phsically raise Jesus
from the dead then he can't raise us from the dead and there is no hope
of heaven," says North-West Australia Anglican Bishop David Mulready.
Bunbury Bishop David McCall joined in the objection, "Jesus was not
resuscitated, he was resurrected. His resurrection body was different.
It was in some way transformed and was no longer subject to the normal
boundaries that our bodies are bound to.
